The State of FDE Jobs 2026 began with a simple observation: the Forward Deployed Engineer market is suddenly everywhere, yet still surprisingly hard to see.
The role is being discussed by founders, AI labs, infrastructure companies, defense startups, enterprise SaaS teams, and candidates alike. The full State of FDE Jobs in 2026 report is now available. We scanned 239,428 live job postings from 6,486 validated employer boards and narrowed them to 5,426 strict FDE or FDE-adjacent roles across 1,311 employers.
Only 923 included roles used a direct FDE title signal. Another 4,503 roles were doing FDE-like work without using a direct FDE title at all.
That means a title-only search misses most of the market. The most common titles in the dataset were:

FDE is becoming a hiring category because complex software and AI systems increasingly need deployment labor that can translate messy operations into working systems. The cleanest signal is not, as we've established by the messy titling of positions, in the role title. It is what the role asks someone to own.
The skill data shows that FDE hiring is not only about AI vocabulary. Python, customer-facing work, cloud platforms, data pipelines, and deployment context appear alongside LLMs and agents.
If the job posting explains what the person will build, where it will run, who will use it, and what outcome they will own, it's much easier for candidates to understand expectations of the role.
FDEs can be found in one of two types of companies: product companies using FDEs as revenue accelerators, i.e, deploying their own software into customer environments, and, service firms using forward-deployed delivery as the billable product.
Remote eligibility appeared in 630 roles, or 11.6% of the strict included population. That makes FDE meaningfully less remote-heavy than many software categories, which tracks with the nature of the work: customer environments, deployment, travel, clearance, and operational context matter.
Compensation was disclosed on 2,309 included roles, or 42.5% of the dataset. Published bands skew toward ATS-disclosed employers and do not capture total compensation at AI-native or frontier-lab employers, so treat the salary data as directional rather than a full-market compensation survey.

For employers, the takeaway is simple: if you want builders to trust the role, make the builder work explicit. Name the code, systems, integrations, agents, workflows, customer environment, and measurable outcomes.
For candidates, search broadly and screen hard. Some of the best FDE opportunities are not called Forward Deployed Engineer. Some roles that are called FDE are mostly demos, configuration, support, or project coordination.
